“Cage with Parrots” is a virtual-reality piece: the story of a man facing one last test before a flight to Mars.

“Of course, it’s more cinema than theatre. But our new work has both. In film, the director and the cameraman control your gaze—they decide where you look, and in that sense it’s a more totalitarian art. In the theatre, you choose for yourself, especially in a production with many figures onstage. We do try to manipulate your attention, of course, but you have a choice. And with ‘Cage with Parrots,’ what came out is a film in which you can choose what to watch,” Didenko says.

The director believes 360-degree technology has a big future in film: “It seems to me it’s a window onto the future—the future of what cinema and theatre will be. You just have to experiment.”
