Professor Preobrazhensky, a surgeon of international renown, attempts a risky experiment: he transplants a human pituitary gland into a dog. It works—the organ takes, the dog acquires human form, speech, and the capacity to make decisions. The professor’s medical revolution, like the October Revolution that shortly preceded the events of Bulgakov’s story, produces an entirely new type of human being.
