What makes a person leave home? Politics, history, circumstances — or simply a “bad mood”?
The performance The Foreigner, inspired by Sergey Dovlatov’s novella, seeks answers to these questions and brings them into today’s reality.
Yet this is not only the story of the heroine Marusya Tatarovich — it is also the personal story of actress Masha Mashkova: her attempts to break into Hollywood, her life in Los Angeles, memories of family, and of growing up.
The Foreigner is a conversational performance with no fourth wall: ironic, honest, funny, and therapeutic.
It speaks about emigration as an eternal human experience — an attempt to find one’s place in the world and to hold on to a sense of humour when everything around suddenly becomes foreign and unfamiliar.
But the essence remains the same: each of us, at some point, becomes a “foreigner” — in a new country, a new profession, or even in our own life.
The performance unfolds through two parallel processes: a theatrical, stage-based one, and a cinematic one. Film itself becomes an integral part of the performance, giving the project a particular depth.
The Foreigner features performances by Maksim Sukhanov, Varya Shmykova, Nikita Kukushkin, and Nikola Ashurkov.
