She grew up in the eternal ice and is therefore immune to the cold. But Rimsky-Korsakov's title character, Snow Maiden, longs for nothing more than to meet people. In her search for love, she must learn that this feeling is not only overwhelming but also life-threatening…

“The Snow Maiden (Snegurochka)” from 1882 is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's third contribution to musical theater, spanning a wide musical range: from Russian folk melodies to detailed soundscapes of natural noises, to an innovative musical language that Rimsky-Korsakov's student Stravinsky later took up again. General Music Director Leo McFall and director Maxim Didenko invite you to discover a forgotten treasure.

Having grown up in Siberia, Maxim Didenko has personally experienced how extreme cold can influence human behavior. Together with his team, he presents a world on the brink of climate tipping point – an ice desert whose population is fighting for its very survival. To cope with the hostile conditions, people have developed various strategies: While the research teams led by Father Frost and Mother Spring strive to overcome the cold with the help of science and fight for the last remaining green plants in this landscape, the majority has reverted to archaic rituals. Led by the charismatic shaman Lel, they invoke anything that provides warmth – be it thermal energy or alcohol. Those who can, defend their interests with armed security forces. And not everyone has the same opportunities: Tsar Berendey lives and rules with a small elite in an underground refuge. For his people on the surface, however, everyday private life becomes more important than ever – above all, the many facets of love. With spectacular visuals, atmospheric videos, and choreographed tableaux, the production tells a fairy tale in the modern guise of a science fiction series.
